Crafting for the Kids - Toucan Box

 The Dreamcatcher

The Dreamcatcher

I like to think of myself as being quite good at crafts and DIY. So when I see handmade stuff that costs the earth, I'll always think I could do it myself. But being a busy working mum, these days the reality is I often don't get time to tackle all these projects. In fact most of them remain firmly as just good ideas in my head that I might get around to one day.

In fact that goes for stuff I can make with the kids too. I'll often see a cool craft project and think I'd like to do that with the boys, but more often than not I don't get around to it. So when I saw Toucan Box I thought it might be a good idea to give it a go.

You see, you get everything you need for a project posted through the door in a neat little box and with full instructions. I thought it might be a good way to give this time-starved mum a chance at actually getting crafty with the kids. After all, I've only got to open the box and follow the instructions! No thinking or running around buying supplies needed.

So we signed up for a free trial box and have continued our subscription for just £3.95 per box (plus postage). We receive a petite box each fortnight which includes everything needed for one project as well as a full colour instruction booklet and ideas for other follow up activities.

So far (we have had about 8 boxes) the projects have been varied and my boys have really enjoyed doing them. The projects vary by how much adult assistance is required, but I enjoy sitting and doing this alongside my boys. Its something that I hoped would give us quality time together not something I would expect them to do independently.

C's favourite project so far has been his dream catcher, which now hangs proudly over his bed. I'm really pleased with how it turned out and it led to quite an interesting conversation about dreams and allowed us to tackle the subject of scary dreams in a reassuring way for the boys.

All in all, I'm really pleased with our Toucan boxes, and I'm considering upgrading to the grande box which offers a bit more, including a book each month.

p.s I'm not associated with Toucan Box in any way, I just really like the boxes!
